A group, the Northern League for 2019 (NL2019), has taken the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chief Olu Falae to the cleaners for allegedly spurning Northern governors over killings by suspected herdsmen in the region.
In a media statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Alhaji Mamuda Abubakar and made available to newsmen in Kaduna, the group took exception to Falae’s declaration that Northern governors had abandoned late Sardauna’s grazing land policy, leading to attacks by the suspected herdsmen. The statement argued that ” on the contrary, there have been series of attempts by majority of the Northern governors to provide grazing lands, only for vested political interests, especially those outside the region, to instigate some ethnic and groups to frustrate the governors’ efforts”.

The group said it was “altogether misplaced to attempt to compare this era with the First Republic, conveniently ignoring the increase in population, modernization and revolutions in the ICT world” advising Chief Falae “not to take us back to the First Republic with an unscientific conclusions, motivated by 2019 agenda”.

The group then warned ” a section of our elites, whose only contribution to our national challenges is indulging in blame games and recourse to the past rather than advising on how to move on”.

The former Secretary to the Federal Government during the era of president Ibrahim Babangida reportedly granted an interview to Channels Television where he was said to have said: “The problem of the herdsmen has been exacerbated by the failure of many of the state governments in the North to take care of the needs of the herdsjmen.’’
