A second look at Senator Wamakko’s ‘Political Strategist of 2019’ Award
By Habiba Umar
When Politics Today online wanted to celebrate its One Year Anniversary in style, the management of the online newspaper spiced up the event with honoring Nigerians “who have done something spectacular” in rescuing people in need of support. I understand that they also brought in the respected Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to participate in the event.
The newspaper also assembled awardees whose political influence is unbeatable in today’s Nigeria, notably Senator Aliyu Magatakardan Wamakko, the Chairman of Northern Senators Forum. For starters, getting the chairmanship of the Northern Senators Forum is itself a very rare feat in a National Assembly full of intellectually-sound lawmakers with vast experience. This is to say that unless you have very rare qualities of leadership, exposure and strategy, the lawmakers at the upper chamber won’t even look at you, let alone give you the mandate to lead the entire Northern Senators umbrella body.
Senator Wamakko’s Best Political Strategist Award was an eloquent testimony to the fact that he remains today the only political godfather, especially in the Northwest, who wields unprecedented political influence. As recently as the re-run governorship and other elections, Wamakko made the battle too tough for a sitting governor, who was once a number three man in Nigeria. Governor Tambuwal will go down in history as the only governor who won a Nigerian re-run elections with the lowest possible mergin. That Tambuwal won his election as a sitting governor with a little over 300 votes indicates that Wamakko’s strategy is simply unbeatable. Imagine, if you were the governor of a State shortly after you held one of the most exalted offices in the land, but in your immediate Constituency a single person has far more acceptability and poularity than you! That has been the size of challenge for Tambuwal. I’m sure the incumbent Sokoto State Governor is himself wondering when or where his political miscalculation started. Imagine just how many years Wamakko has left Government House in Sokoto; imagine how many times the entire State stood still whenever Wamakko returned from foriegn trips. Imagine the insignificant crowd a former Nigerian Speaker of the House of Representatives could mobilize in showing off his democratic assets.
It is obvious that for a long time to come, the history of modern Sokoto’s politics would remain mainly a testimonial about the unprecedented influence of Senator Wamakko, who has sustained same tempo for just too long.
The award bestowed on him therefore, speaks volumes about the kind of earthshaking politics that Senator Wamakko has been playing for decades. He still seems to be the last man standing in Sokoto politics several years after his exit from Government House. This perhaps explains why some call him with the nickname of ‘Alu’ a euphemism for the “first”, or “one and only”.
It is indeed worth the while to celebrate this award, even though it is neither the first nor the last – for a man who bestrides Nigeria’s political terrain like a collosus. This fact could be gleaned from his impressive curriculum vitae, as read out by the Compere, during the One Year Anniversary of Politics Today at Hamdala Hotel in Kaduna on Saturday, 27th April, 2019; a copy of which I beg to reproduce below:-
