As former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, officially left the ruling APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Monday, March 10, his defection has triggered a wave of controversy, with some arguing it was a rash decision on his part.

Meanwhile, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has made it clear—El-Rufai’s entry doesn’t shake his 2027 ambition. Speaking on a TV show monitored in Abuja, Adebayo dismissed concerns about political heavyweights joining the party, insisting they must follow the “SDP way.”

“For some of these so-called heavyweights, their weight is just in the media,” Adebayo quipped.

“I’m already in SDP, I’ve built my structure here, and everyone knows I’m running in 2027. If you’re joining, you’re coming to learn, not to dictate.”

He emphasized that unlike parties where one figure holds the ticket indefinitely, SDP remains open but structured. “You can join, but you start as an ordinary member,” he added.

In another development, there was a report of “a crowd of Pro-Nasir el-Rufai protesters” that was said to have on Wednesday stormed the National Headquarters of the SDP, demanding the removal of the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye.
