A group under the auspices of Northern Democratic Forum(NDF) has rejected the idea of Dr. Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President of the current National Assembly.

This was contained in a statement titled “Opposition to the candidature Senator Godswill Akpabio for Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, signed by the group’s National Secretary – Abba NaAbba on Wednesday.

NDF gave its reason for Akpabio’s rejection to include his political trajectory, including what it described as “his history of unethical behaviour, incompetence, and a long list of corruption allegations”, saying these have made him “unfit for the position, and his actions have caused great harm to our community and country.”

The group also argued that the lawmaker has not been as sensitive to the needs of the people as he should be.

“As a leader, Senator Akpabio has shown a complete disregard for the needs and concerns of the people he was elected to represent. His policies have left many vulnerable members of his community without access to basic needs. Instead, he has enriched himself and his cronies through corruption and embezzlement of public funds as Governor, Senate Minority Leader and Minister for Niger Delta,” the NDF argued.

Turning to Akpabio’s controversial sojourn at the Ministry for Niger Delta, the group also scored him low as Minister.

“Akpabio’s leadership has also led to a decrease in safety and security in the Niger Delta region. Under his watch, crime rates have skyrocketed, and the justice system has become increasingly compromised as a result of corruption and political influence. Instead of taking action to address these issues, the Senator used his position to advance his interests and suppress opposition”, NDF said.

The group, in the Statement, listed attributes of the Senate President Nigeria deserves at this point in time, in apparent rejection of Akpabio’s candidature.

“The Senate deserves a leader who is committed to improving their lives, who is transparent, and who puts the needs of the people first. We urge our Senators-elect to carefully consider the implications of electing Senator Akpabio and to choose another candidate who will work to build a better future for everyone”, it stressed.

The NDF, in the statement, also said it represents a group of citizens “committed to promoting ethical leadership, good governance and advocating for the needs and rights of the people of Nigeria.”
