The newly-elected chairmen of 19 local government councils in Kaduna State are to be sworn in today, Tuesday the 26th of June 2018.

A statement from Sir Kashim House, signed by Samuel Aruwan Governor Elrufai’s Senior Special Assistant – Media and Publicity –  disclosed that caretaker committee chairmen have been appointed for the four local government councils where elections were inconclusive or subject to litigation. Aruwan explained that the caretaker executive committees will serve, pending the conclusion of consultations with the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

“The Kaduna State Government has announced that the Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, will swear-in the newly elected chairmen of the 19 elected local government councils tomorrow. The government congratulates the chairmen on their emergence, and looks forward to working with them to institutionalise a new paradigm of public service in the local government level.

“The government introduced electronic voting, at considerable public expense, to further enhance election integrity at the local level. Despite this, people that did not want votes to count took deliberate actions to mar or prevent elections in four local government areas. There is ongoing litigation on some of the results, while elections did not hold at all in Kaura Local Government. A vacuum in local governance cannot be permitted while these issues are being addressed.

“Pending the conclusion of consultations with the Kaduna State House of Assembly on the necessary legislative actions to enable expeditious compliance with Section 7(1) of the Constitution with respect to the four local governments without elected chairmen, the state government is appointing caretaker executive committees to handle the affairs of Chikun, Jaba, Kajuru and Kaura local government areas” the statement added.

Aruwan then revealed thus: “The following persons have accordingly been appointed as chairmen of their respective caretaker executive committees, and will be sworn into office along with the 19 elected chairmen:
1. Chikun:Hajiya Hadiza Yahuza
2. Kajuru:Mrs. Felicia Kyomsom
3. Kaura:Dr. Bege Katuka
4. Jaba:Hadiza Usman Muazu

“The councillors that were elected in eight of the wards in Chikun LGA will also be sworn-in to constitute the legislative arm of the council as prescribed by the law, and they will work with the caretaker executive committee for the Council.”
