Kaduna banditry: The beginning of the end
By Abdulsamad Chima Amadi
After the attack on Kerawa, Zariyawa, Marina and other villages in Igabi and Giwa local government areas of Kaduna state by bandits on Sunday 1st of March 2020, I watched a visibly worried Governor of Kaduna state , Mallam Nasir El-Rufai talk to the media.
Unlike the arrogant egocentric dictator that those who hate his guts portray him to be, Mallam El-Rufai humbly apologized to the people for the inability of the government to avert the attack on their community. The governor went further and made it categorically clear that his government will not negotiate with any bandits, rather the government will fish and wipe them out.
If the terrorists and bandits were listening to the governor (and I strongly believe they were), I think they should be very worried. This is because anyone that knows Mallam Nasir El-Rufai will agree the man is a very dogged fighter who, when he starts fighting, will never relent until he achieves victory. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is the last person any sane human being will ever want to have as an opponent in any type of fight or contest. He is very patient, so calculative and when he strikes, his strikes are always spot on with devastating effect. I am talking based on experience.
I was once a prominent member of a very formidable team that was assembled to fight El-Rufai. Each time I recall what transpired during those periods we were fighting and trying to malign Governor El-Rufai, I regret not listening to an advice my late father once gave me; NEVER MISTAKE THE GENTLE STRIDES OF A LION TO BE A SIGN OF WEAKNESS. We mistook El-Rufai’s initial reluctance to fight us back as a sign of weakness. A mistake I think these bandits also made.
When we were fighting El-Rufai, he dangled us the olive branch on numerous occasions. He did all he could to make peace with us, but like the proverbial dog that was destined for destruction, our leader refused to listen. I remember on one occasion, El-Rufai’s then political adviser, now senator, Mallam Uba Sani privately visited our leader’s mother (may her soul rest in peace). Mallam Uba Sani, who also respected and took our leader’s mother like his own mother, told her to call her son to order. That all the attacks by her son on the governor and his government will get him no where, it will only lead him to self destruction. Whether she spoke to him or not, I can’t tell, but all I know is that our leader, never ceased fire. He was always encouraging us to fight, malign and ridicule Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and his government. The few ones like Aliyu Saidu (Dan Baturiya) that threaded with caution and refused to join on the attack on Mallam Nasir El-Rufai were treated as traitors and denied all forms of available incentives. Some of them were frustrated out of the fold, while some like Aliyu Saidu (Dan Baturiya) left on their own when they discovered that the group was heading for self destruction.
After exhausting all avenues of trying to make peace with our leader without any success, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai fought back.
His first missile landed on our political thugs. The governor’s then political adviser, Mallam Uba Sani, his adviser on youths Hon Auwalu Yaro Maikyau and the member representing Kaduna North at the House of Representatives , Hon Samaila Suleiman, some how managed to identify politics thugs that were loyal to us. These Governor’s men rehabilitated the thugs, got them means of legal livelihood and took them away from us. This brought a very disturbing feeling of insecurity to us and our leader. We no longer had thugs to use in causing chaos at functions and insulting El-Rufai’s appointees. We became paranoid, and so could no longer go out boldly to political functions in the state.
The next target was our media team, a team I singlehandedly formed and supervised. The same Mallam Uba Sani and Hon. Samaila Suleiman got across to many of my team members. I don’t know what they told them or how they did it, but in a blink on an eye, our well packaged and very formidable media team was in disarray. Many resigned their posts, a lot stopped obeying our directives to attack Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai and his appointees on cyber space. It got to a point that our leader was the one going online himself to hurl insults and attacks on the governor and his team.
With no thugs to use to cause chaos at political gatherings and a very depleted media team unwilling to take orders from our leader to malign the governor and his team, we became like toothless bulldogs. We barely hung on to avoid being laughed at by our opponents. But right inside us and within the camp, we knew Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai has defeated us.
Some grumbled silently within our group, others kept forming “all is well”, but even our leader himself knew, we’ve been crushed.
Despite our false hope of having a “fellow comrade” at the National leadership of the APC, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai delivered us the final blow during the primary elections. We lost the party ticket.
What happened during the elections proper can be described as the final clearing of the mess by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. We contested on another platform, but lost woefully. Our could not even deliver the pooling booth stationed in front of his family house. We lost it. It was a huge disgrace that we found very difficult to come to terms with.
I know some people still doubt the Governor’s statement that he will crush those bandits and terrorists, hence the above story. I want the doubting Thomases to understand that when Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai decides to fight back, he never looks back. He will make sure he dismantles all organs from which you get your strength and support.
Almost immediately after making the said pronouncement, the governor was seen with some heads of military establishments in the country. When I saw that, I knew Governor Nasir El-Rufai has started putting necessary machineries in motion to crush the bandits that have been terrorising our people.
This is why I strongly believe that as far as banditry and terrorism is concerned in Kaduna state, we have reached the beginning of the end.
