Key figures within Nigeria’s political landscape have dismissed reports suggesting a mass defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai announced his resignation from the APC on Monday, citing a misalignment with the party’s current direction and a desire to pursue progressive values through the SDP.

In response to speculations about his potential defection, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi reaffirmed his commitment to the APC. Addressing the rumors on his verified social media account, Fayemi stated, “As I have had cause to state in the past, I am a card-carrying foundation member of the APC, and this position has not changed.” He acknowledged internal challenges within the party but expressed hope for reform, emphasizing, “I believe it is still not late for our party to change course and move towards greater inclusion and internal democracy.”

Similarly, Mallam Salihu Moh Lukman, a prominent strategist within a proposed national political coalition, was reported by Blueprint newspaper to have described El-Rufai’s defection as premature. He emphasized that he would not follow suit unless the SDP meets specific conditions set by the coalition, underscoring the importance of patience in ongoing negotiations.

The Kaduna State chapter of the APC also addressed El-Rufai’s departure, stating that they are not perturbed by his decision and remain focused on strengthening the party within the state.

These developments, according to pundits, highlight a period of introspection and potential realignment within Nigeria’s political parties as they prepare for the 2027 elections.
