Islamic State Greater Sahara (ISGS) militants launched a coordinated armed assault on Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) positions near Titabé, Yagha Province, Burkina Faso. The clash left at least 16 JNIM fighters dead, with ISGS seizing 17 rifles and several motorcycles. The attack occurred close to the Niger border, south of the Dori–Téra axis, a key corridor linking Burkina Faso’s Séno Province with Niger’s Tillabéri Region.

This was not an isolated incident but part of an escalating cycle of retaliatory violence between the two rival jihadist factions. ISGS last struck JNIM positions near Dori on 22 July 2025, in direct response to earlier attacks in which JNIM fighters killed ISGS members in the same contested zone. The Dori–Niger corridor remains a flashpoint in their struggle for territorial dominance, with ISGS intent on controlling the entire route from Ansongo in Mali to Téra in Niger — a plan meeting fierce resistance from JNIM.

According to TRAC, the scale and effectiveness of the latest ISGS operation — including the killing of a large number of rival fighters and the capture of valuable equipment — suggests a strategic shift by ISGS leadership. This likely involves deploying additional manpower and resources along the Yagha–Séno–Tillabéri axis to dominate cross-border trade and smuggling routes. A notable precedent occurred on 28 July 2025, when around 200 ISGS fighters mounted a large-scale armed and arson attack on a supply convoy between Dori and Gorom-Gorom, showcasing their ability to project force deep into the region.

With deepening rivalry, high-casualty engagements, and the symbolic significance of this corridor for both groups, TRAC warns that tit-for-tat violence will almost certainly escalate in the coming weeks. The risk of increasingly destructive operations — including ambushes, arson, and targeted assassinations — remains high, threatening not just militant forces but also civilian populations and vital supply lines across the volatile borderlands.
